Loft Insulation

DSCN1005As warm air rises, much of the heat within a dwelling is lost through our roofs if they’re not properly insulated. If fact, around 25% of heat is lost through the roof of an un-insulated building. The most common way to combat this heat loss is to insulate the attic space at ceiling joist level. This is known as loft insulation or attic insulation. This is the most effective and cost efficient method of insulating a roof.

At Comfort Solutions Ireland, we provide a variety of loft or attic insulation options. These include: Glass wool quilt, sheepwool insulation, multi-layer foil and insulated board. We can discuss each option with you and advise on which one may suit best, for you to make an informed decision for your individual dwelling. Factors affecting your decision may be: the cost, what the attic is used for, allergies suffered etc. Comfort Solutions Ireland guarantee the best materials, fully qualified and experienced installers and that no shortcuts will be taken during any installation.

Attic_InsulationGenerally, glass wool insulation (fibreglass) is most popular. One layer is fitted snugly between the joists and then another layer is rolled out on top like a quilt to bring the total depth to at least 300mm which will bring any attic to the required U-Value of 0.16W/m2K. Fibreglass is the least expensive option and provides perfectly adequate insulative properties when fitted properly. See illustration below:

It is vitally important that all these insulations are installed correctly, as improper or inadequate installation may lead to problems such as condensation as well as compromising performance. Also, it is essential that the correct safety equipment is worn during installation, as some insulation materials can cause skin and respiratory problems when the material is disturbed.

In order to complete any attic insulation project, there are a few other tasks which need to be performed. These ensure that all safety standards are complied with and that all future problem possibilities are eliminated.

Your cold water tank (if you have one) must be insulated. This will help prevent condensation and freezing in cold weather giving you complete peace of mind.

2. Insulated Walkway:

It is very important to have a safe walkway installed in order to provide access to your water tank. If 300mm of fibreglass was installed without provision of a walkway, it would be impossible to find joists to safely walk upon due to the depth of the insulation. We provide and install specially designed insulated walkways for this exact purpose. Access your tank with ease and in safety, without compromising on insulation.

3. Pipe Insulation:

It is also necessary to ensure that all pipe-work throughout the attic space is correctly insulated. This will keep water from freezing within pipes and control condensation.

We hope that this gives a good indication of what is required to insulate an attic to the required levels. Comfort Solutions Ireland undertake to complete each and every job to the highest possible standards and strive to surpass client’s expectations of competency and quality.

Also, there is currently a grant available of €250 for any upgrades in attic insulation. All the above measures would have to be completed in conjunction with these upgrades in order to be eligible for grant assistance.
