A cash grant is now available to assist with the cost of installing a heat pump in your existing home. Please beware that it's of the upmost importantance that your contractor and the proposed heat pump are registered and certified respectively, for grant eligibility. There have been many, many cases of heat pumps being installed and when it comes around to claiming the grant, funding is denied because the heat pump didn't have the required certification and/or the contractor or his installer was not registered with SEAI. All homeowners, including landlords, whose homes were built and occupied before 2011 can apply. This is defined as the date your electricity meter was installed. Note that this is different to other grant measures where the home must be built before 2006.

Grant eligibility

One of the requirements for a dwelling to qualify for a heat pump system grant is that the dwelling has low heat loss, ie. that it's well insulated. This is to ensure your heat pump system performs well and that running costs would not be too high. If your home's building fabric is not up to the required standard, you would need to consider upgrading it in order to be eligible for the heat pump grant. Technical Assessment

In order to determine with or not the building fabric of your home is of a sufficient standard, you must undertake a "Heat Pump Technical Assessment" before applying for the grant. This can be carried out by an SEAI Registered Technical Advisor. Your Technical Advisor will carry out the Technical Assessment on your home, and will advise you on what steps to take to make your home “heat pump ready”, eg. to upgrade insulation and/or windows, etc.

There is a €200 grant towards the Technical Assessment of your home, with this grant only payable in conjunction with the heat pump system grant. To qualify for this funding you must both undertake to carry out the Technical Assessment and to upgrade your home (if required) to the required standard and then proceed with the heat pump grant application.

Please note that uninsulated homes built more than 30 years ago may require substantial and costly upgrades to qualify for a heat pump system grant. For homes such as this, you should either be willing to spend a significant sum of money (perhaps €40,000 - €50,000) or consider a wood pellet heating system instead.
