Insulation Types

Insulation_2

We use a number of insulation types in our External Insulation & Finish Systems. All insulations are both adhesively and mechanically fixed to the walls.  This is a requirement of our NSAI certification and ensures the best possible insulation to wall bond. Each insulation has its advantages and disadvantages, but don't worry, our insulation experts will guide you to what suits you best.

Phenolic Insulation

Phenolic_board

This insulant will give the best U-value for thickness of board ratio. Phenolic is a pink coloured board with a very low thermal conductivity. With a Phenolic insulation thickness of 70mm, you can achieve a wall U-value of 0.25 on a previously uninsulated wall, which exceeds current building regulations for wall insulation. Phenolic insulation is expensive, prone to damage from moisture and not suitable for all wall types.

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)

EPS

We generally use Graphite Enhanced EPS70 (silver in colour) which typically requires 100mm board thickness on an uninsulated wall to achieve a U-value of 0.27W/m2K or better, which meets 2008 Building Regulations (0.27W/m2K) and the requirement for the Better Energy Homes scheme. A further 20 - 40mm would be required to meet current Building Regulations of 0.21W/m2K. EPS70 is a breathable insulation and is suitable for use on most wall types. Standard (white) EPS70 is also available, is slightly cheaper but needs to be thicker to meet same U-value. EPS70 is the least expensive insulation option for EWI, yet high quality and very versatile. For these reasons, EPS70 is by far the most common insulation used for EWI in Ireland today and is easily recognisable by its white or silver colour. Contact us for further details.

High Density EPS200 is used for plinths, around windows and below grade. EPS200 is more study, more durable and most importantly, moisture resistant. If used below grade, any insulation must be fully wrapped in a bitumen type material to ensure no moisture ingress and the longevity of the product and system.

All EPS70 and EPS200 products supplied by Comfort Solutions Ireland are of high quality (there are cheap alternatives) and are fully approved by NSAI and by SEAI for grant aided works.

RockwoolRockwool

This mineral fibre board can also be used for specialised contracts and is especially suited for old stone buildings or where a high fire rating is required. Its main advantage is its breathability and when combined with a breathable render, provides a very effective solution for situations where moisture may be present eg. in old lime mortar built walls.

It is generally a little more expensive than EPS insulation but offers the above advantages over any other insulation system in Ireland today. Rockwool is also commonly used as a firebreak between buildings or around flues and chimneys for extra fire safety.
